PROJECTS, DESIGNS & ANIMATIONS
Welcome to my site, my name is Russell and this site is just a test ground for some of my ideas, work and a portfolio and if possible a way for me to help out anyone who needs a little bit of help.
Me
A little about me...
I find pretty much everything interesting, but my passion is design. I love to create new things to try and get the ‘wow’ factor into every design. I am nearly all self taught from knowing nothing about web sites, computer aided design (CAD) and flash to my current level, I wouldn't boast that I know everything - far from it, but what I don't know I figure out quickly. The internet and its ability's are continually expanding with new techniques and endless possibilities.

I enjoy trying to push my own limitations in what I’m capable of, this is the way I have learnt everything I currently know, it just goes to show that if you put your mind to it anything can be done. I have been designing for about 3 years. I use most of the Adobe range and Some of Autodesk’s programs.

Sun
This is from a tutorial i followed, Pete Draper\'s deconstructing the elements; however I have changed various elements with the particles generation and the materials as I didn\'t like the outcome while sticking exactly to the tutorial. I would recommended his book to anyone who wants to get to grips with particle generation in 3dsMax.

Viewing room
This is a room which expermitation take place i used 3DS Max to build the room and Vray to render it this is just expermiments in anticipation for my course in september at futureworks manchester.

Fairy present
A fairy poster i made for a birthday present The background and foreground tree were taken from a fairy tutorial i discovered while looking for scenery footage to use.

I used the 2 images and manipulated them to the way i wanted duplicating the background then using the clone stamp tool to brush of the seams. I then went about making both side of the background completely different as i didn't want it to look like the image had been mirrored at all. I then created a cloud layer using various brushes. I used a moon brush and added a faint glow, the clouds around the moon where on a separate layer and they inverted to make it seem as they were glowing under the moon light. Once again i used another brush for the silhouette of the bird flying in the background.

The foreground tree was cut out using the extract tool annoyingly Adobe in there infinite wisdom decided CS4 no longer need the extract tool so i had to download it as an optional add-on.

Here is the link if anyone is interested Extract Tool CS4

Using the tool is easy, however the tree did need quite a bit of cleaning up after the extract tool had done its job.

The lovely young lady in the photo is my girlfriend and she has got a bit of a thing for fairys lol, So once again i cut here out of an image i had using the extract tool, resized her changed the layer brightness and levels, to blend her more in with the scene. Being a red head she has very pale skin which i found quite troublesome when trying to blend her with the background to make her seem if she was there.

The wings are once again another brush the glittery effect is just a slandered, softened bush which has had its settings changed, scattering setting mainly. Then i gave the layer a slight glow, the spiral going around her body with glitter is done on 2 different layers i just drew around her body then erased the lines that were supposed to be behind her. I added the text and then added some more glitter effect brush to it.

I then set about setting the mood of the entire shot adding to different colour layers and a camera tone, finally i merge the whole image to one layer and added a lighting effect.

Adversity Online Poster
Just various scenes i created up in 3ds Max and then placed in Photoshop to fine tune. Adversity Online is a long term project which will eventually be a game, currently its in its infant stage.

Avatar
After watching the film Avatar, a friend decided he wanted to see if he could re-create a Na'vi. I decided to give it a go at the same time, helping a friend over come the difficulties that came from building a head.

This is a work in progress so its not finished, however I wanted to put it on here so you could see some of the stages it went through to get the where it is currently.

As you can tell its not perfect but its getting there, my plan is to take this model into Zbrush and and some more detail to it and generaly fine tune the whole face.

You can see some more picture on this here

DSE Ship
Once again another work in progress and long way off being anywere near the quality for production. This ship is being designed for a short intro movie for a new game concept.

This ship is called a Deep Space Exploration (DSE for short).

It primary mission is to seek out a new world and take a few billion lucky poeple away from a stricken solar system.
You will here more about this game as the concept grows and you can see more of this ship here.

Dice
The title says it all really, a pair of dice made in 3ds Max.

I used vray as the rendering engine on this production I have an animated video of these dice also which i will upload soon.

Planet in a nebular
A planet created in 3ds Max surrounded by a nebular with a white dwarf glaring from behind.

Star Trek Online Map
With the launch of a new game "Star Trek Online" Came a new opportunity for me to flex some of my skills and design a map for the Star Trek Online Galaxy. . .

"I can hear you all screaming GEEK, by the way :P "

Anyway, although the game is VERY good the in game map lacks functionality so i decided to build one using PHP, MySQL, XHTML and Javascript.

This map added the ability to search for systems, which in game you cannot do and often waste valuable time looking for the system or asking someone.

This map also has the ability for players to add additional information about each system... obviously once approved.

Another feature the map has is a auto complete script when typing system names.
It is a real pain sometimes remembering how to spell the systems because they have strangely spelt names

You can click on each sector on the map and it will load the "Sector Space Map" which is basically a map inside a map.

This is the second version of this map the first was just a simple search box giving you the details of were the system is.

I have styled the pop ups and buttons to resemble the in game style. I think personally that this make it feel more part of the game.

You can view and use this Star Trek Online Map here

Planet, moons, and rings
I'm currently working on a new Navmap for the Game Star Trek Online, while working out how to make constellations and galaxies, i got a bit side tracked and made this scene on photoshop.

It consists of two moons a planet and some rings, it was very simple to make if any of you are interested in finding out how please post on the forum and ask for a tutorial :)

Tip
I used maps for the planet and moons and used the filters clouds, twirls, noise for the rings, the sun was a simple lens flare.

The Dark Shadows Clan CMS (Clan Management System)
After using many different CMS's including Drupal, E107, NukeEvo, Raven Nuke, Nuke I decide they just weren't cutting the cake they way I wanted them to so I decided to start a project to build my own CMS "Clan Management System" ;-)

I started off wire-framing which I done a lot of. Once I was happy with the layout I chose a colour scheme, seeing as the clan is called "The Dark Shadows clan" I thought it was best to keep the style as dark as possible with a few injections of colour to catch the eye.

I then set about creating a user system for the site and then built around that fusing everything together.

The CMS is almost fully object oriented and what isn't will be converted as the beta stage of the site comes to an end.
Why beta test this site? Well the answer is simple, the admins and I were getting tired or lazy of doing website chores all the time.

With Nuke everything is separated and not very fun and very time consuming! With this site everything is integrated and 90% automated, yup the admins barely have to lift a finger.
The beta stage of the site will run for a few months to weed out any issues and also add some new functions to the site which have been suggested by other members.

The site was built using XHTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL
The website validates as

Encoding: utf-8
Doctype: XHTML 1.0 Transitional

Here is a list of some of the features this site has
  • Forums
  • Gallery (Including a flash gallery which is auto updated on approval of images)
  • FAQ (With ask a question function)
  • Clan Roster
  • Music Player
  • News
  • Private messaging

Warcraft III Frozen Throne
Something I designed for another game. Snow and icicles done using smudge tool, plastic wrap, burn tool and noise.

Passage
This was originally going to be the background for the dark shadows website, although it's not textured it has quite a dramatic effect.
I used Vray only to render the environmental lighting, using standard target direct lighting with a volumetric effect to give the effect of a misty dust.
Tip
I used a handy little plug-in for the pyramid effect named "GREEBLE" you can get it from here Max Klanky.
If you like using it as much as i do please support his charity "Pineview Wildlife Rehabilitation Center!"

Ds Design Concept V2.1
This is a concept of a futuristic interface for a clan website using multiple layers in photoshop.

Many different gradients, bevels, glows and shadows were used to get the desired result, however for me this wasn't enough and there was always something missing.

I am happy with the layout of this concept it took a few wire frame attempts to finally get what i was looking for. I normally sketch a few layouts on paper and then when I'm happy with a few i redo them on photoshop using plane shapes.

Flower Shop
I created this template using Photoshop, the template is for a flower shop specializing in roses. With romantic, deep luxurious reds and tints of pink this design just screams luxury flowers.

  • A shop
  • Contact form
  • Flash gallery (using istock footage)
  • DHTML menu

The Horse and Groom Alresford
This was designed on Photoshop, when the client was happy with the overall design I began to work on the flash gallery and the coding of the website.
This site has the following
  • Gallery
  • Grey box on all pictures
  • Facebook business page
  • DHTML Menu
  • Flash flip page menu

Ds New Website Template V1
Building a new website for Ds programming the entire website using PHP and MySQL Original Concepts designed on Photoshop I will be using "div" tags for better accessibility and faster loading times. Most if not all graphics will come from CSS... The picture you see here is the concept I came up with on Photoshop.
This site has a
  • Flash intro
  • Gallery
  • News(News_submission)
  • Clan roster
  • Profiles
  • Forums

Zing
Another flash header and UI, to be brutaly honest im not to sure why i created this... must have got bored one night.

Freelancer NavMap
This was my first attempt at a PHP and MySQL driven site, its based around a game called FREELANCER, built by Microsoft and digital anvil it was published in 2000. The Navmap was designed to help new players to find their way around the vast expanse of space (in the game :-P ) You can click on a target on the Navmap and it will show you what is inside that area of the map also you can do a search for way points using the search button at the top. Click here to view the NavMap

Pure Clans
Pure Clans banner with built in navigation, Pure Clans was a free clan/team/faction website for gamers. I used the CMS Nuke Evolution to create it. Pure Clans ran for about 3 years, with over 300 Free hosted websites. unfortunately due to financial circumstances I had to shut it down. All of the sites were backed up including databases so all owners could install their sites where ever they could find the available hosting.

Gaming Medals
These medals were designed and created by me using 3dsMax. These were created using splines, nurbs, various materials and Vray lighting to produce medals
Tip
To make the barbed wire create splines and the use the render settings to thicken the wire. For the curled spikes use the helix then use the loft modifier then use the deformation tool select your helix and do a path constraint now just snapshot it to duplicate it and your done

Pen Ship
This is a creation on AutoDesk 3ds Max based on a pen, I bought a new tablet for my PC and the pen (I know this sounds stupid) gave me some inspiration to design a spaceship. Although this model isn't finished yet you can see how a simple object can be manipulated to create anything. My next task is to add some simple animation to the project making the sun phase and solar flares also making the ship come out of some sort of jump gate and fly straight towards the screen. Keep your eyes pealed for the updates.
Tip
The sun uses simple noise maps and bump maps to produce the texture of the sun and the gases have been created using "Afterburn combustion."

Simple Flash Menu
This menu was made using flash and actionscript 2.0 as you can see it gives a nice effect. this is done using this action script:
Tip
_root.image.onEnterFrame = function() {
if (mouse_over_image) {
_root.image.nextFrame();
} else {
_root.image.prevFrame(); }
};

Water Effect
A nice water effect using flash ActionScript 2.0

Flash Gallery
This gallery was built using Flash and has an added steam effect for hot foods. This gallery was built for a local pub of mine for their website. it is located here
Tip
A simple gallery can be constructed using frame selection. Click on the desired frame in the time line convert to key frame then name that frame or just remember the number of that frame. All you have to do now is convert an object into buttons use this code
on (release) {
viewer .gotoAndStop ( 5 );
}

You could also change the 5 to a named frame

Flash banner with navigation
This flash banner has a pre-loader with a small slide and glide effect complete with sound effects and all at a total size of 1.49 MB.
Tip
Importing high quality sounds and graphics will always increase your overall project size, unless you compress/optimise your files.

Concrete Room
This is simply a room built using AutoDesk 3ds Max very low poly count high graphic maps from ArrowWay Textures and then Afterburn combustion for the fire like atmosphere tunnelling down the room.
Tip
The 3d text material was a chrome effect using "Raytrace in the reflection maps. I then used a HDR map as the bitmap on the reflection map to reflect the picture I used..

Ogame Theme
Ogame theme modified using css and the new Ogame formats pictures.
Tip
Play Ogame? Feel free to use this theme or just check out the full design. The link
